Top 10 Most Underrated Artists in Modern Music

Top 10 Most Underrated Artists in Modern Music: Why Underrated Artists Matter in the Streaming Era?

I’ve spent my whole teenage years watching certain artists get nonstop hype while others quietly drop really good music that barely gets talked about outside small circles.

After calling out the overrated ones last time, I figured it was only fair to shine a light on the artists I think deserve way more love and attention. These aren’t unknown nobodies — some of them have solid fanbases and critical respect — but the casual streaming numbers, big award wins, or mainstream “icon” status don’t match how much replay value and actual craft they bring.

This is my personal Top 10 Most Underrated Artists in modern (mostly 2020s) music, ranked from 1 to 10. Some of these takes might be wrong or whatever since I’m still figuring shit out, but they’re honest based on what I actually listen to.

    10. The Weeknd

The Weeknd is certainly one of the biggest pop superstars right now. He literally defined the sound of 2010s and 2020s R&B with his darker style and massive hits. He has insane streams, chart numbers, and drops consistent albums that don’t really miss. His tours are huge. But he still feels underrated in certain ways — especially with all those Grammy snubs. He broke the mainstream with After Hours. Singles like “Blinding Lights”, “Save Your Tears”, and “Heartless” were everywhere in 2020, yet the Grammys completely wiped the album from nominations. It was a nightmare. Then last year everyone expected Hurry Up Tomorrow to get multiple nods, but the Recording Academy snubbed him again. “Timeless” was perfect for Best Melodic Rap Song, and the album at least deserved an Album of the Year spot — especially when Justin Bieber’s mixed-reviewed SWAG got nominated. Another thing is, over the past few years The Weeknd has been ranked below Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran on some lists, even though Bieber and Sheeran had career downfalls in the early 2020s while The Weeknd’s albums haven’t flopped since his peak. Commercially he’s huge, but the legacy respect in awards and rankings doesn’t always match what he’s actually done.

    9. Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey creates these cinematic, beautiful worlds with her songwriting and vibe. Her albums have serious depth and that nostalgic-but-modern feel that rewards long listens. She has a huge dedicated fanbase, but I still think her deeper, more atmospheric work gets slept on compared to viral moments or flashier pop stars. The emotional weight and replay value in her catalog deserve even wider attention. Her albums consistently get critical praise for emotional depth and nostalgic vocal performance, but they often flop on charts and streaming. In some big rankings she even gets wiped out — for example, she was missing from Billboard’s “100 Greatest Artists Of The 21st Century” despite so many critically acclaimed albums.

    8. Deftones

Deftones have this dreamy, heavy texture that blends metal, shoegaze, and atmosphere better than almost anyone. Their 2025 album Private Music kept that emotional depth alive, and their older stuff still hits differently. They have a loyal fanbase and real rock respect, but their nuanced side often gets overlooked outside dedicated circles in favor of louder or trendier stuff. The replay value in their sound is crazy when you really sit with it. Despite having a very loyal fanbase and critically acclaimed projects, they still haven’t fully broken the mainstream. Sadly, they don’t even have a single song with over 1 billion streams on Spotify.

    7. Charlie Puth

Charlie Puth is ridiculous when it comes to melodies, vocal control, and tight songwriting. He can make polished pop that actually has real craft underneath, and a lot of his tracks have insane replay value. He has so many mainstream hit songs, but he’s still not recognized as a great pop star. He deserves more respect for how well he constructs songs instead of just chasing vibes. There’s even a theory behind his lack of recognition — he has tons of hits, but none of his albums were critically praised except his latest one, Whatever’s Clever!

    6. Pusha T

Pusha T has some of the sharpest lyricism and coke-rap storytelling in hip-hop over the last three decades. His projects are tight, clever, and hold up really well on repeat. He gets huge respect inside rap circles, but outside of that he rarely gets the same mainstream buzz or “GOAT rapper” talks as flashier artists. Even his recent project Let God Sort Em Out was frequently described as the best album of 2025, but it didn’t get much mainstream success on streaming platforms. Honestly, I think Pusha T gives some of the sharpest lyricism in recent hip-hop, but he’s still very underrated when it comes to streaming numbers.

    5. Little Simz

Little Simz is one of the best lyricists working right now. Her projects are consistently high quality, mixing sharp rap with real depth and strong production. She puts out thoughtful, well-crafted albums year after year, but she doesn’t always break into the massive mainstream conversations or casual streaming dominance like some bigger names. In hip-hop especially, she deserves way more casual love for how sharp and consistent she is.

    4. Beabadoobee

Beabadoobee has great hooks, real emotional honesty, and she’s grown a lot from her bedroom pop roots into something warmer and more lived-in. Her songs feel like conversations you want to keep having, with strong replay value. She has a solid fanbase, but she still hasn’t hit that full superstar level her songcraft and personality suggest she could. A lot of her tracks sneak up on you and stick around longer than flashier releases.

    3. James Blake

James Blake is a master at atmospheric production and those layered vocals that pull you in. His 2026 album Trying Times showed even more warmth and movement while keeping that intimate feel. He influences so many bigger artists, but his minimalist, thoughtful style rarely gets the casual pop-star treatment or massive chart runs. When you actually sit with his music, the emotional depth and production choices are insane, yet he flies under the radar for a lot of listeners.

    2. Mitski

Mitski writes some of the rawest, most emotionally precise songs out there. Her lyrics hit hard and her arrangements build tension perfectly without feeling fake. She has a dedicated indie fanbase that loves her, but I still think her music deserves way bigger mainstream reach. The emotional weight and replay value in her tracks go deeper than a lot of the bigger pop stuff that blows up, yet she often stays in that “indie darling” box instead of getting the wider recognition her songcraft earns.

    1. Underscores

She got her breakthrough with the album Wallsocket. That album was instantly certified as a “Must Hear Album” on AOTY. And in 2026, we’ve seen plenty of A-list pop stars failing with their new projects — like Bruno Mars, BLACKPINK, Harry Styles, and The Kid Laroi. Meanwhile, Underscores dropped U, a banger full of funny hyperpop songs. To many eyes (including me) it’s the most creative and best album of the year so far. However, this album couldn’t earn streaming dominance even though Bruno Mars and Harry Styles have been dominating charts with their flop albums.

That’s my list. Underrated doesn’t mean completely unknown — it just means the attention and praise don’t fully line up with the songwriting, production, and replay value I hear when I actually listen. I know some of these opinions might be off or worthless because I’m not fully matured yet, so tell me where I’m wrong. It’ll help me get better.
