The album is structurally split into two halves — “girl so in love” and “you seem pretty sad” — which immediately tells you this isn’t just a collection of pop songs thrown together. This feels intentional, conceptual, and genuinely thought-out. The first half carries tracks like “maggots for brains” and “purple,” which honestly sound like nothing she’s attempted before. The second half leans into something darker with “what’s wrong with me,” “less,” and “cigarette smoke.” If those titles are anything to go by, this album is going somewhere heavy.
Previously released singles “drop dead” and “the cure” both appear on the record, alongside “begged” — the unreleased track she debuted live on SNL back in May, seated on a swing that mirrored the album cover. That image alone caused a frenzy online, and now knowing where it sits within the album’s architecture makes it even more exciting.
Reuniting with producer Dan Nigro — the person behind Sour and Guts — also means the sonic foundation is in safe, trusted hands. These two clearly have a creative chemistry that works, and whatever direction Rodrigo steers it in, Nigro knows how to translate her vision into something that actually hits.
There’s also a quietly cool detail worth noting: the tracklist’s typeface bears a resemblance to The Cure’s visual style — and given that Rodrigo has spoken openly about her friendship with Robert Smith, that feels like more than coincidence.
